Peter Weir Gets On His Way

Peter Weir, who has been on and off projects since his last film, 2003’s Master and Commander, has put together a cast for a movie of his that may finally be happening: The Way Back.
Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Across the Universe’s Jim Sturgess, and Atonement and City of Ember’s Saoirse Ronan (she pronounces it “sur-shuh”) are all in final talks to star in the film. The Way Back, which was also written by Weir, follows the real-life story about a group of soldiers who devise a grueling escape plan from a Siberian gulag in 1942.
Farrell would play a “tough, tattooed” Russian; Harris an American; Sturgess a young Polish inmate; and Ronan a young Russian runaway they meet during their escape. Weir has done some excellent work in the past, so as long as he can manage to stay on this project, The Way Back sounds very promising indeed.
The film is slated for a March start date. Check out the entire Variety article here.
