Quick Hits & Snack Bits: Cancer Vixens, Mother Truckers, And Crowley
Not too many big stories breaking these past couple of days, but a lot of red carpet chatter is leading to a lot of small hints of what’s to come. Case in point: MTV caught up with Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and learned a bit about a pet project she’s got in the works: Cancer Vixen: A True Story. Based on Marisa Acocella Marchetto’s graphic novel of the same name, the story is an autobiographical look at the author/cartoonist’s battle with breast cancer that is equal parts humorous, sassy, and serious. A brief animation at the book’s website about sums it up. “Cancer…I am gonna kick your butt! And I’m gonna do it in killer, 5-inch heels!” Blanchett’s currently developing it “slowly and carefully,” looking for the appropriate director to bring the project to life with her in the starring role.
Craig Brewer, who shot to fame with Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, has found his next project. The director will helm Mother Trucker, an action-comedy that’s based on a Maxim article by Steven Russell and follows a man who breaks out of prison, steals an 18-wheeler, and boogies across the South to see his dying mother with police hot on his trail. Sounds heartwarming.
And for a pairing as long-awaited as De Niro and Pacino, Harrison Ford is teaming with…Brendan Fraser! OK, the two actors may not have been making the best movies as of late, but I’m still a fan of both of them for the simple fact that they’re both charming as hell. The two will appear in Crowley, a drama about a couple whose two kids have a rare genetic disorder. Rather than give up hope, they take them to see a researcher with a potential cure. Fraser will play the father and Ford the researcher in the film, directed by Tom Vaughan (Starter for 10, What Happens in Vegas) and written by Robert Nealson Jacobs (Chocolat, The Shipping News). OK, charming actors or not, this film’s gonna need one hell of a trailer to get me interested at all.
