Beware of possible spoilers if you’ve been living under a rock…

So anyone who saw the first Transformers remembers that Megatron had a run-in with the wrong end of the All Spark Cube and bit the dust in the film’s finale, but does that mean he’s gone from the franchise for good? Transformers without Megatron just seems wrong, no? Michael Bay has been saying over the past few months that Megatron would NOT be in Revenge of the Fallen, and with no evidence to the contrary, we’ve had to play along with his little game…until now!

Hugo Weaving, who voiced Megatron in the first film, let slip to an Australian paper that he’ll be making a return for the sequel.

“I’ve already done [the voiceover work],” Weaving says, adding Bay had told him to keep the news hush-hush. “He’s over in LA and we were working on the video split sort of thing and I had this strange conversation where he seemed to imply it was all a big secret. So there you go – I’ve given you the secret scoop.”

So how is Megatron resurrected? Weaving is coy about revealling too much, but does give a tiny hint.

“I think in the last one, doesn’t Optimus Prime pick up a little bit of, a shard of the cube, or the thing that’s left, and he takes it with him. Maybe there’s something there… but I don’t know,” he laughs.

Ha! Hugo Weaving drops the scoop, suggesting that Megatron will be somehow resurrected in the second film, thereby contradicting Bay’s earlier comments and foiling his evil plan to cruelly tease fanboys and his legion of followers! …Right? Just when they thought they were safe, along comes Bay again with the inevitable deny! From his website:

Okay cat is out of the bag. Megatron is back —- but you will only get to see him from the long lost past. We go way back in time as this movie explains the mythology of the Primes. He is not a tank like everyone suggests, but an alien vehicle. But sadly he does not has much screen time.

Agh! Curse you and your grammar mistakes, Bay! C’mon, Megatron HAS to come back in this one, and not just in flashback form! Okay, I get it. You’re trying to keep your movie’s probably already-thin (and I don’t think that’s a bad thing) plot from getting released all over the interwebs. So fine, sorry Transfomers fanboys, but the man’s gotta fight the good fight.

But really…he’s coming back, right?
