Awesome DISTRICT 9 Teaser Arrives

The official teaser for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 is now online at Apple.

Based on his short Alive in Joburg, District 9 is Blomkamp’s documentary-esque sci fi thriller about a world in which aliens have arrived on Earth as refugees of sorts, co-existing with humans but living like second-class citizens. A shadowy government organization, Multi-National United, actively oppresses the immigrants in an effort to contain their population and also learn of their weapons capability. The extraterrestrial race, however, finds an unlikely ally when a government agent exposed to their biotechnology becomes a target; they must work together in order to survive and to expose the atrocities committed by MNU against the alien race. Check out the teaser below (there’s a pretty awesome reveal, worthy of watching in HD or, better yet, catching it on the big screen in front of X-Men Origins: Wolverine this weekend):

The trailer highlights the flawless blending of live-action and CGI footage that Blomkamp is known for, and plays out with enough intrigue and mystery to not only get me pumped for this film, but to think wistfully of what the director and producer Peter Jackson could’ve achieved if they had been allowed to move forward with their Halo adaptation.

District 9 hits theaters on August 14, 2009.
