The first (green-band) trailer for Kevin Smith's Cop Out was a huge letdown. I've been a fan of Smith over the years but his recent fare hasn't especially impressed me, and it looked like Cop Out wasn't going to be bucking any trends. But now MySpace has released the red-band trailer for the film and you know what? It's pretty damn funny. It's not breaking any new comedy ground and relies almost entirely on penis-related jokes, but the oddball chemistry between Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis plays great, and even Sean William Scott elicits a good laugh.

I still don't know if this is going to be the movie that completely restores my faith in Smith, but it finally has my attention now. I'm genuinely looking forward to it, and I'm hoping the final product will more closely reflect the red-band trailer rather than that boring green-band one.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the most divisive directors we've had in recent years. While he proved that he's a talented filmmaker with movies like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, his other works have either been mixed bags (I loved Signs and really enjoyed The Village, but I know plenty who hated both) or outright disasters (Lady in the Water wasn't good; The Happening was just an utterly puzzling experience). Still, that kind of talent doesn't just suddenly disappear, right? Everyone can fall into a slump -- it doesn't mean they're incapable of returning to form.

So when Shyamalan signed on to adapt Nickelodeon's extremely well-regarded series Avatar: The Last Airbender for the big-screen, fans were understandably worried. On the one hand, Shyamalan's a big name and bound to get the kind of budget and studio support other directors can't. He has the potential to deliver a truly great film. On the other hand, this was the guy who just put out The Happening. The early teaser seemed to earn some excitement, but, for the most part, didn't sway anyone one way or the other. Now we get a second and better look at the film via UGO's premiere of its Super Bowl Ad. The result? Pretty impressive.

Still, that kind of talent doesn’t just suddenly disappear, right? Everyone can fall into a slump — it doesn’t mean they’re incapable of returning to form.

So when Shyamalan signed on to adapt Nickelodeon’s extremely well-regarded series Avatar: The Last Airbender for the big-screen, fans were understandably worried. On the one hand, Shyamalan’s a big name and bound to get the kind of budget and studio support other directors can’t. He has the potential to deliver a truly great film. On the other hand, this was the guy who just put out The Happening. The early teaser seemed to earn some excitement, but, for the most part, didn’t sway anyone one way or the other. Now we get a second and better look at the film via UGO’s premiere of its Super Bowl Ad. The result? Pretty impressive.

Check it out, plus our thoughts and some posters, after the jump.

The effects look spectacular here, and it really appears that Shyamalan has crafted a vibrant and cohesive world to do justice to the one fans of the cartoon series fell in love with (also see if you can spot Appa the Sky Bison in the top left corner of the frame during the first shot of the North Pole battle scene. UGO points him out if you can’t). The action set pieces look like they’re going to be stunning and even Noah Ringer looks legitimately bad-ass as Aang in the Avatar State. So why am I still worried?

Part of what made the series so successful was its uniquely hilarious sense of humor and a balanced mix of lighthearted fun with heavier drama. Shyamalan can do drama, this we know. But can he do humor (The Happening makes a strong case that he can, but how much of that was intentional)? Can Shyamalan adequately capture the fun of the series, or is the whole thing going to be a dour experience peppered with a few sparse and largely ineffective jokes? And for a story that excelled so much because of its brilliant cast of characters, I have yet to see enough of the acting to know if Ringer and co. can carry their weight. First time actor who already has to overcome the fact that he looks kind of goofy? They’ve got an uphill battle to fight.

For the record, I do want and hope the movie to be good. My doubts are probably just a means of protecting myself from disappointment, but believe you me, if this movie is as good as this ad suggests it can be, I’ll be amongst its happiest and most vocal of supporters.

Anyway, while we’re here, here are a few of the posters for the film. The first two come from Yahoo! and the last one comes from Empire.

A new trailer has hit the nets for The Losers, the big screen adaptation of the Vertigo comic series by Andy Diggle and Jock, and boy does it look like all kinds of fun.

We were pretty excited when news about the fantastic casting first started rolling out for The Losers, being big fans of the comic, but the involvement of heretofore unproven director Sylvain White (whose most notable movies are Stomp the Yard and the direct-to-video sequel I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer) kept us from getting our hopes too high. Well, judging by the footage from this first trailer, it looks like we may have had nothing to worry about all along. The trailer is snarky, fun, and action-packed, exactly the sort of genre cocktail that we hoped would carry over from the comics.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba play pretty wonderfully off each other, and is there any actress whose geek heat-meter is rising faster than Zoe Saldana's? After a year that included roles in Star Trek and Avatar, it looks like the talented actress is in for another hell of a year. And for the borderline campiness that is Jensen, Chris Evans pulls off some of his more ridiculous lines with a solid amount of aplomb. He continues to be one of my favorite young actors working today.

Lionsgate has released a second trailer for Kick-Ass, this one showing off the film's action while remaining suitable for all audiences. And you know what? It still kicks ass. We get a sense of the kooky, crazy fun that Matthew Vaughn's movie is promising to be, and the real shit-your-pants stuff is hinted at just enough to entice. It introduces all of the key players with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor about it all that makes these otherwise outlandish characters seem (mostly) believable. Even a sword-wielding little girl that'll literally leave you in pieces? You better believe it.

While Aaron Johnson is going to get his fair share of shine after the movie, I think it's safe to say that the real breakout star is going to be Chloe Moretz with her turn as Hit-Girl. After stealing scenes in (500) Days of Summer, and with the upcoming Let the Right One In remake Let Me In coming out on October 10th, she's poised to have a big 2010. And this isn't even counting her appearances in the kid-friendly fare she has in the pipeline either (i.e. Diary of a Wimpy Kid). With her anchoring the supporting cast along with Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Clark Duke, and Mark Strong, Kick-Ass is looking to take names when it hits this spring.

A new teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's Inception unspooled in front of most showings of Sherlock Holmes over the weekend, but if you haven't seen it yet, it's now online for you to view in high def glory. There's still very little anyone actually knows about the film, and while the teaser does offer some hints of what to expect, it's not enough to glean any solid plot details. What we do get is some stunning visuals of the expectedly mind-bending variety -- Paris folding in on itself, a gravity-defying brawl, water tilting upwards in a glass, etc.

The film has a ridiculously amazing cast -- Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Michael Caine. It doesn't come out until next summer, but you can whet your appetite for what's sure to be a head trip by checking out the teaser after the jump. We'll also do some good ol' speculating, too, so click through to ponder just what Nolan has cooked up for us.

A new teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception unspooled in front of most showings of Sherlock Holmes over the weekend, but if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s now online for you to view in high def glory. There’s still very little anyone actually knows about the film, and while the teaser does offer some hints of what to expect, it’s not enough to glean any solid plot details. What we do get is some stunning visuals of the expectedly mind-bending variety — Paris folding in on itself, a gravity-defying brawl, water tilting upwards in a glass, etc.

The film has a ridiculously amazing cast — Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Michael Caine. It doesn’t come out until next summer, but you can whet your appetite for what’s sure to be a head trip by checking out the teaser after the jump. We’ll also do some good ol’ speculating, too, so click through to ponder just what Nolan has cooked up for us.

Apple also has the teaser in HD.

So, what do we know? The film takes place in the “architecture of the mind,” and you can see that literally realized here with the scene of Paris folding in on itself. Based on what we’ve heard and what we’ve now seen, it appears that in the world of the film, it’s possible to enter a person’s mind. DiCaprio’s character is set on doing just that to steal an idea from someone, though we don’t know who the mind belongs to or what the idea is. Earlier suggestions that there’s a heavy meta component to the film could be valid, as one shot does see DiCaprio slowly turning around to eventually look…at the camera? Just past the camera? Whether or not there is a diegetic explanation for that shot remains to be seen, but for now it could be a hint that the film is a self-reflexive one.

We can also speculate on some of the rules of the mind-entering process. My hypothesis is that when you enter someone’s mind, you can fashion the surroundings to a certain extent. Imagination apparently plays a key role, as DiCaprio can be seen telling Page’s character, “Never recreate from your memory. Always imagine new places.” The process is not without its risks though, as destroying these imagined worlds appear to be as easy as constructing them. Page’s screams of “Wake me up! Wake me up!” also suggest a very real danger to the process. I’m sensing some potential similarities to the world of the Matrix, too, as the characters alternatively appear in suits and plainer dress based on their surroundings, with the suited versions seeming to occur in scenes where the world looks a little more constructed. Perhaps those are scenes where the characters are in someone’s mind, as opposed to the real world? And the scene where DiCaprio and Page are sitting at an outdoor diner while explosions go on in the background — my guess is that’s a “training” scene of some sort, where DiCaprio is teaching Page about the mind-diving process.

All of this is, of course, completely speculative. I could be way off base here, and I usually avoid the speculating game entirely, but I thought it’d be fun to try to milk this teaser for what few details we can. Feel free to chime in with your own thoughts about what you think we can learn from the trailer.

Inception is in theaters on July 16, 2010.

A red-band trailer has surfaced for Repo Men, the sci fi action thriller starring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Alice Braga. Formerly titled the much more interesting The Repossession Mambo, I caught the script several years ago and it was one of the best that I had seen in a while. The film's been sitting on Universal's shelf for some time now, but hopefully that isn't a reflection of the final product's quality. I'm excited for this one; if it can retain the energy and promise of the screenplay, then Repo Men (as unfortunately retitled as it may be) could surprise some folks next year.

The story follows Law and Whitaker as best friends Remy and Jake, two repo men who work for The Union, a company that provides expensive artificial organs that are forcibly repossessed when clients can't make their payments. They're the best in the business, but trouble arises when a routine repossession goes awry and leaves Remy needing a transplant himself to survive. Suddenly seeing things from the other side, things get more complicated when Remy runs into Beth, an old flame who's on the run after being unable to make her organ payments. When he joins her, Remy suddenly finds himself being hunted by none other than his former partner, Jake. The film also stars Liev Schreiber, Liza Lapira, and RZA.

Check out the poster and age-restricted trailer after the jump, which comes courtesy of MySpace.

I was hoping Cop Out would be funny -- what with Kevin Smith at the helm and Tracy Morgan and the deceptively amusing Bruce Willis headlining -- but alas, we can't always get what we want. It seems after shedding its former A Couple of Dicks titling, the film may have also lost its sense of humor, because this is one unfunny trailer.

Tracy Morgan's one of those actors whose off-the-wall antics can be funny if utilized in the right way, but it looks like Smith let him run way too wild here. Add that onto the fact that the jokes aren't anywhere near funny (I mean, the whole "stop repeating me" bit...really?), and this trailer has effectively killed any interest I had in the film. Smith's talented, though, so I'm hoping that maybe the trailer just got put together with the film's worst jokes, or maybe some of them work better in the context of the narrative. But really, there's no indication that this movie is funnier than what the trailer is selling, and if that turns out to be true, that's really disappointing.

Knight and Day, which was once titled Wichita (and really, neither are very good titles), has a new trailer up on E! The film re-teams Vanilla Sky co-stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz as a super-agent and his hapless hostage/cohort, respectively. I haven't really loved any of James Mangold's films, though I tend to like 'em all well enough, so I wasn't expecting much from the film. But after watching the trailer I have to admit, it actually looks like it could be some fun. The film's also got a pretty stellar supporting cast, including Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano, Marc Blucas, and Viola Davis.

It seems pretty savvy to me that Cruise, who a lot of people haven't been able to take seriously in a long time, has eschewed some of the more traditionally dramatic roles he would've played for the fun, off-kilter, kind-of-crazy roles that his public persona makes him perfect for nowadays. I've always loved him as an actor, and I'm glad to see him embracing this turn in his career. Humor can earn a lot of forgiveness, and Cruise definitely seems like he's on the right path for a comeback. Well, I'm pullin' for the guy, anyway.

Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion, a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff. With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

Robin Hood hits American shores on May 14, 2010.

The fourth and (purportedly) final Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, now has a teaser trailer and poster. A lot of the blogosphere isn't looking forward to this film, especially after the laughably bad third installment, but I'm sure plenty of folks will still turn up to see this movie. I'm a fan of this universe, and though the first film is still the only one in the franchise that I'll sit down and watch through to the end if I happen to flip to it on cable, I'm still hopeful that this new one will turn out well.

The teaser doesn't convince me one way or the other on whether or not this will be more Shrek than Shrek the Third, though. It has some amusing moments, but also some signs that it might succumb to the same kind of middling jokes and antics that dragged down the third film and, to a much lesser extent, the second one. Maybe the quasi-reboot they're doing with the whole alternate reality storyline is what will get the franchise out of its boring comfort zone. We'll have to wait to see.

In the meantime, you can see the poster and teaser after the jump, or in HD at Apple.

The film will follow their rise to superstardom amidst a turbulent relationship with abusive manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), with lead singer Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and lead guitarist Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) serving as the focal points.

The little we do see looks promising enough, and though Fanning appears to lack the timbre of Currie's voice, she's certainly got the sass and attitude. This will be an interesting film for both Fanning and Stewart; their most overtly complex roles to date where their maturation as performers will be placed front and center. I'm intrigued to see how they do, and whether or not this will be the movie that pushes them from being child/teenaged actresses into just actresses. Long-time music video director Floria Sigismondi will make her feature debut from her own script, and so far it looks like she's captured the mix of posh and grime that would become a distinct part of The Runaways' style.

MGM has released the trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine, the time travel buddy comedy starring John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke. The film follow four friends who find themselves transported to the past (I'll let you guess their time-hopping vehicle of choice) after a hard night of drinking. Hilarity/shenanigans/life-altering epiphanies ensue.

The new trailer is a bit too tame for my tastes, and doesn't live up to the hilarious teaser we saw a few months back. There are still a couple of funny moments, though, so I suggest you give it a watch. Robinson's scenes do their best to keep this thing afloat, and it should attract at least some new interest. I'll be waiting eagerly for the red-band trailer, though, which I'm sure will fully unleash the wild and vulgar comedy I'm convinced this film has. This green-band one just doesn't do much for me.

The official synopsis goes like this:

Hot Tub Time Machine follows a group of best friends who’ve become bored with their adult lives: Adam (Cusack) has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Corddry) is a party guy who can’t find the party; Nick’s (Robinson) wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob (Duke) won’t leave his basement. After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, the men wake up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. This is their chance to kick some past and change their futures – one will find a new love life, one will learn to stand up for himself with the ladies, one will find his mojo, and one will make sure he still exists!

Directed by Accepted’s Steve Pink and written by Josh Heald and Sex Drive scribes Sean Anders and John Morris, Hot Tub Time Machine warps into theaters on March 19, 2010.

A new trailer has been unveiled for Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans. We get more story this time around, with some actual speaking lines for Alexa Davlos' Andromeda and Sam Worthington's Perseus. Liam Neeson's Zeus also gets in a few choice lines -- and to great effect. The creature effects for the film really look stunning, and if you thought the first trailer was impressive, the appearance of the Kraken at the end of this one should have you wishing for more.

I'm really starting to get excited for this film. I love me a good adrenaline rush involving sword fights and monster battles. Greek mythology has always been a ripe realm for modern day special effects artists to run amok in, too, so I'm loving what I'm seeing. The new "Damn the Gods" tagline is also a big step up from the ho-hum "Titans will Clash."

Looks like Tony Stark’s going to have to face some demons by coming to terms with the fact that after years of running a weapons manufacturer, there are going to be a lot of people whose lives have been ruined by the weapons his company once peddled. And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s got the government breathing down his neck for his weapons technology, a smokin’ new assistant in Scarlett Johansson, and battle suits chasing him around. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

Iron Man 2 is an agonizing 142 days from release — it comes out on May 7, 2010.

Disney has released another trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. We get a much better look at the lush world Burton has fashioned this time around, but it comes at you pretty quickly so don't blink or you'll miss it. The trailer is set to debut in 3D in front of Avatar this weekend, but you can already get a sense of what elements will be popping off the screen.

I wasn't as excited as I had hoped I would be for this movie after the initial teaser trailer, but this new trailer reveals enough to get me genuinely amped to see Burton's madness unfold. Depp's Mad Hatter looks delightfully insane, and Helena Bonham Carter's bobble-headed Red Queen is an excellent mix of menacing and ridiculous. I've been hoping to see Mia Wasikowska speak more than a couple of brief lines, but no dice here. Guess I'll just have to wait for the movie to come out in March.
