The West Coast is just waking up, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has already finished announcing their nominations for this year’s Oscars. It’s the first year since 1943 that there are 10 nominations for Best Picture, and it’s refreshing to see some films that might usually get overlooked receive some much-deserved kudos.

Most of the list is nothing surprising though, as the usual suspects that have been picking up noms and wins throughout the awards season are the ones filling out the categories for the Academy Awards. In the running for Best Drama are Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious and Up in the Air. (500) Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie & Julia, and Nine will compete for the Best Musical or Comedy award. I'm glad to see a non-traditional film like The Hangover score a nom, and I'd love to see (500) Days of Summer win, but I think it's a foregone conclusion that the usually-safe HFPA is going to dish the Golden Globe to Nine (which isn't to say that Marshall's film isn't fully deserving of the prize).

Some notable nominations elsewhere include Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) competing against her ex-husband James Cameron (Avatar) for Best Director, Joseph Gordon-Levitt ((500) Days) for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Colin Firth (A Single Man) for Best Actor in a Drama, Carey Mulligan (An Education) for Best Actress in a Drama, Meryl Streep competing against herself (It’s Complicated and Julie & Julia) for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Woody Harrelson (The Messenger) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) for Best Supporting Actor, both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) for Best Supporting Actress, Neill Blomkamp scoring a Best Screenplay nom for the otherwise-shutout District 9, and an absolutely STACKED Best Animated Feature Category (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Princess and the Frog, and Up). I am a bit flummoxed by Sandra Bullock’s double appearance on the list, though, especially the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy nod she got for The Proposal (huh?!?).

On the TV side of things, HBO dominated as usual with 17 nominations. Fox’s Glee, however, led all competitors with four nominations. Competing for Best Drama are Big Love, Dexter, House, Mad Men, and True Blood. The Best Musical or Comedy category has 30 Rock, Glee, Entourage, Modern Family, and The Office competing against each other.

The overall list is a bit goofy at times, but the Golden Globes are an entertaining show (who doesn’t love to see stars get bombed and have a good time?), and with Ricky Gervais hosting, I’m looking forward to this year’s ceremony. The show will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton on January 17, 2010. The full list of nominees can be found below.

Carol doesn't have much direct competition through the winter season either, so it may find a foothold yet.


The Men Who Stare at Goats bowed above expectations with a decent $13.3 million haul for 3rd place. The Fourth Kind, meanwhile, came in right behind in 4th with $12.5 million. Richard Kelly's The Box however was unable to find an audience, with the esoteric director's third feature debuting in 6th place with a sub-par $7.9 million. As for last weekend's number 1, Michael Jackson's This Is It dropped to second with $14 million, while Paranormal Activity rounded out the top 5 with $8.6 million to come just short of the $100 million mark.]]> AChristmasCarol_still03

The real success at the box office this weekend was Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire’s 13th place opening, which smashed limited release records with $1.8 million across 18 sites, or a $100,000 per-theater average. Splinterheads also bowed in limited release with $12,000 at one site.

Next week, Roland Emmerich tries to end the world again with disaster epic 2012. Pirate Radio, the British comedy from Richard Curtis that was previously known as The Boat That Rocked, will also go wide at around 900 venues. 2012, with its 3000+ theater release, should obviously come in first. The record stands at 49 for 64.

The total fell well short of expectations, which started out modest but ballooned after strong pre-sales and a $7.4 million Wednesday haul. It seemed most theatergoers itching to see the late King of Pop do his thing one more time showed up on opening day though; Thursday numbers fell to only $3.7 million. The doc did gross $68.5 million in foreign ticket sales however, which brings its 5-day worldwide total to an impressive $101 million. Saw VI meanwhile continued to disappoint, bleeding out to 5th place with $5.6 million for a $22.8 million two-week total. Michael Jackson’s concert documentary This Is It won the top spot at the box office, grossing an estimated $21.3 million over the weekend to bring its five-day total to $32.5 million.

The total fell well short of expectations, which started out modest but ballooned after strong pre-sales and a $7.4 million Wednesday haul. It seemed most theatergoers itching to see the late King of Pop do his thing one more time showed up on opening day though; Thursday numbers fell to only $3.7 million. The doc did gross $68.5 million in foreign ticket sales however, which brings its 5-day worldwide total to an impressive $101 million. The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day opened in the specialty market to the tune of $462,000 in 68 venues, or a so-so $6,794 per-theater average. It goes wide starting on November 13.

Next weekend will be a crowded market as four new films come to the box office. Richard Kelly’s horror thriller The Box, Robert Zemeckis’ motion-captured A Christmas Carol, the based-on-a-true-story alien abduction thriller The Fourth Kind, and George Clooney comedy The Men Who Stare At Goats all will hit theaters. Jim Carrey and a family-friendly classic should be enough to vault A Christmas Carol to the top of that pack, though where the other three finish will be tough to call. I’ll say The Box wins some intrigue points to finish second, while Men Who Stare At Goats will come in third. I feel like The Fourth Kind’s audience has largely had their docu-horror dose this year with Paranormal Activity, so it will probably finish last among the new releases. As for the specialty market, the Sundance darling Precious goes into limited release. The record remains at 48 for 60.

Next up is the emotional Sundance winner Precious, which has an absolutely stunning new poster. I’m loving the marketing campaign for this film thus far. You can see the earlier one-sheet here.

Lastly we have a teaser poster of sorts for Avatar, the hugely anticipated James Cameron film that will debut 3D footage in Hall H at Comic-Con later this month. The Comic-Con banner shows a close up of one of the Na’vi, the giant alien creatures that play a central role in the film (also via Coming Soon).
